Democrats in the Majority = Significant Immigration Progress
There’s no band-aid that fixes Colorado’s (or the US’s) immigration issues. It’s a complicated issue that goes back to the Pilgrims: illegal immigrants from the beginning. But complexity doesn’t mean our lawmakers get a free pass on addressing issues, as we’ve seen in this past legislative session in Denver. With Democrats in the majority, the Colorado General Assembly has faced the music and passed more immigration reform-based bills than ever before.
There were lots of bills on the table, but the ones that passed careful scrutiny include:
- Senate Bill 90, which says police and sheriff’s officers must notify U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities whenever they have probable cause to believe that anyone they’ve arrested for some other crime may be in this country illegally was signed by the governor.
- Senate Bill 110 would impose a $50,000 penalty for forged immigration documents and is on the governor’s desk.
- Senate Bill 206 would make smuggling illegal immigrants into or through Colorado punishable by up to 12 years in prison. This bill is in committee. 5/8/06 update: This bill is now with Gov. Owens.
Democrats are facing the difficult issues and getting the job done.
