Bundle of Immigration Progress
The bulk of immigration reform needs to be addessed on the national level—and our representatives voiced their opinion on that debate by passing a resolution agreeing with the Western Governors’ Association resolution.
But they passed a hefty bundle of bills that apply closer to home as well. One bill increases the penalties for human smuggling—impacting the smugglers, not the smuggled—and another bill levies a huge fine on anyone caught making false documents. They’ve also prohibited sanctuary cities and added an illegal immigration task force to the state patrol. Finally, companies with state contracts must limit their hiring to documented workers and police officers must notify the feds when they arrest a suspected illegal alien.
The chapter on immigration reform is far from closed, but our representatives made more immigration progress this session than ever before.
