Democrats Tough on Crime
A 9News report on the “tough on crime” legislation that was signed into law this session ended with this line, “Colorado lawmakers crack down on crimes they haven’t addressed in years.” Most of the report points to an improving economy allowing legislators to invest money in “tough on crime” legislation, but that leaves out a major part of the story.
Pre-Ref. C, a better economy didn’t make much difference to the state coffers. (Remember that ratchet affect?) Not to put too fine a point on it, but if Democrats just got the majority for the first time in decades, they weren’t the ones we should hold accountable for the budget nightmares.
In fact, when Dems got the majority, they crafted the referendum that voters passed so lawmakers would have money to invest in Colorado. And that made it possible for an improving economy to refill state coffers.
It’s easy to talk tough on crime; Democrats put their money where their mouth is.
