Colorado Crops Dying for Water
“It’s really important to put a face on the crisis farmers in this area are facing,” State Rep. Mary Hodge said at a press conference today near Greeley. The faces of Weld county farmers are sunbrowned and creased with worry as they look over parched fields and contemplate lost crops and revenues. As well they should be. Less than anticipated snowpack runoff caused the state to shut down wells right after many farmers had planted crops. Lawmakers and farmers met to discuss a plan that would get the water flowing and the crops growing.
So far there’s a plan with support from the Central Colorado Water Conservancy District and the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District, but the water isn’t flowing yet. While municipalities quarrel about their future needs, farmers watch their futures wither. Read more in the the Greeley Tribune.
