Human Trafficking Heading for a Slowdown
The 2006 Trafficking in Persons report estimates that 800,000 people are victimized each year, but it’s extremely difficult to track these victims so the estimate could be wildly off.
Rep. Alice Borodkin’s HB 1143 created the Interagency Task Force On Human Trafficking—and the Task Force garnered $450,000 federal dollars for the CO Dept of Justice to help address the problem.
“While we probably cannot stop this hideous crime, we can learn to identify the victims,” said Rep. Borodkin. “Modern day slavery is not only the sex trade, but it also includes people brought to this state against their will to work without pay in the fields, the kitchens, and as domestic slaves in private homes.”
